Security boost won’t affect Yokota’s Friendship Festival over the weekend

YOKOTA AIR BASE — The move to heightened-alert status here over the weekend won’t affect the Friendship Festival Saturday and Sunday.

The supply and east gates will be open to the public both days from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., said the Yokota public affairs officer, Capt. John Sheets.

Officials initiated Threat Condition Alpha, the lowest of four alert levels, Saturday after “intelligence sources indicated a higher threat” of terrorism, Sheets said. He would not say if that threat involved U.S. forces worldwide or in Japan, or how long it would last.

Last week U.S. forces in the Middle East were put on highest alert after intelligence reports suggested that terrorists might attack U.S. military or civilian targets in the region. The threat came one day after U.S. officials indicted 14 suspects in the 1996 bombing of a U.S. Air Force barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

Threat Condition Alpha means “we’ve increased our security posture,” Sheets said, adding that base residents should not be worried or feel threatened.

“We ask everyone to keep their eyes open. If they see any suspicious activity, please call Security Forces,” he said.
