Atsugi to open its gates for annual
‘Wings’ air show this weekend

Naval Air Facility Atsugi will hold its annual open base event “Wings” Saturday and Sunday. The event, which began in 1955, pays special tribute to Carrier Air Wing Five, the only forward deployed Air Wing in the Navy.

On Saturday the gates will be open from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. The event will include a static display of U.S. and Japanese military aircraft. There will be no flight demonstrations this year because of noise concerns in the surrounding communities. However, visitors can meet pilots and crew, listen to music, buy food and souvenirs, play games, and take photos.

At 6 p.m. the event will become the Bon Odori Summer Festival with folk dance and performances by the Taiko drum groups.

On Sunday, gates will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., with the same events as Saturday, but with no Bon Odori Festival.

Guests are asked to come by train since the roads will be crowded and there is no parking outside the gate. Buses from Yamato and Sagamioostuka stations will bring guests to the flight line from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and return guests to the stations from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Buses from Sagamioostuka will bring guests to the Bon Odori Festival from 5 p.m., and return guests from in front of the White House administration building from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

The main gate will be closed to vehicular traffic at 7:30 a.m. both days, but will reopen for pedestrian traffic at 10 a.m. The east gate will be open to vehicular traffic, and the west gate will be open to vehicles and pedestrians.
