OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea A U.S. soldier assigned to Osan Air
Base has been indicted by South Korean prosecutors for allegedly hacking into more than 50
Web sites of South Korean companies and schools.
He has been identified as Pfc. Robert Baer III. His age and unit were
not immediately available.
Baer was apprehended in April while using a computer at the home of a
girlfriend in Pyongtaek, the community just outside Osan Air Base.
South Korean cyber police alleged at the time of his arrest that he
had hacked into more than 50 South Korean Web sites. He is accused of destroying files in
some sites and creating backdoors so he could enter the sites at will.
Prosecutors also allege that Baer is a member of an international
computer hacking group, We Hate People.
Baer has been in U.S. military custody since shortly after his
arrest. Under the U.S.-South Korea Status of Forces Agreement, he will remain in U.S.
custody until his trial and any subsequent appeals are completed. If convicted and
sentenced to prison, he will serve the sentence in a South Korean prison.
Asked what punishment Baer could receive if convicted, a
prosecutors office official said, Whatever the court decides.
