BAMBERG, Germany — Girl Scouts of all ages treated members of the Bamberg community to a free trip around the world Saturday.

As part of the annual, international Thinking Day, Girl Scouts from Bamberg put together displays on several different nations of the world. The displays included samples of each country’s cuisine, skits and facts on the country and some of the country’s handicrafts.

About 100 Girl Scouts took part in the event in Bamberg, but Thinking Day is celebrated worldwide by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts to commemorate the birthday of cofounders Lord Robert and Lady Olave Baden-Powell, said Sonja Mawson, leader of Brownie Troop 491.

"Girl Scouts can do anything for Thinking Day, even if that means just putting on their uniform," Mawson said. "We chose to celebrate with food and tell the Girl Scout story."

"This was a chance for our Girl Scouts to learn what Girl Scouts around the world are experiencing," said Kelley Prince, Lone Troop Committee chairperson.

The girls of Junior Troop 24 spent six weeks getting their display on Mexico ready.

"This was a good opportunity for us to learn things about other countries," said Eva Lanier, a Scout from Troop 24.

"We got to make the decorations and plan how to do [the display]," said Cristena Luna, also from Troop 24.

Thinking Day is Feb. 22 each year, but was observed on Saturday in Bamberg so it wouldn’t conflict with school, Prince said.
