Bush plans to visit Yokosuka
during October trip to Japan

TOKYO — President Bush will be making his first trip to Japan in October to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Japanese media reported Thursday.

Bush also will visit Yokosuka Naval Base on Oct. 18, according to Marine Maj. Patricia Johnson, a U.S. Forces Japan spokeswoman.

Bush will visit Japan Oct. 16-18.

Mike Chase, a Yokosuka spokesman, could not confirm the Bush visit, but said a team from the White House visited the base Saturday.

A U.S. Embassy spokeswoman in Tokyo could not confirm the visit to the naval base, saying only that it was a possibility. She said the White House advance team visited sites in Japan recently, including Yokosuka.

"Nothing is confirmed at all," she said. "It’s on a list of possible trips. The president likes to (visit the military) and we hope it happens."

Japanese news reports stated Bush would meet with Koizumi at a resort in Hakone, southwest of Tokyo.

Topics to be discussed include the U.S. military presence on Okinawa, and economic and environmental issues. Neither the U.S. Embassy or the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs would confirm the reported agenda.

Bush is making the stopover in Japan on his way to Shanghai to attend a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Seoul said Bush also will visit South Korea, but no further details were available.

Jan Childs and Naoko Sekioka contributed to this report.
