Goalie Casey Schramm of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing makes a foot save to secure the win for his team Tuesday at Camp Foster.

CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa — Monday’s heartbreak gave way to Tuesday’s joy for goalkeeper Casey Schramm and 1st Marine Aircraft Wing of Okinawa.

Schramm made two saves during the penalty-kick shootout, and Walter Contreras notched the game-winner in the fifth round as Wing edged Marine Corps Base Hawaii 3-2 on Day 2 of the Marine Forces Pacific Regional Soccer Tournament.

Wing lost 3-2 to Okinawa’s 3rd Marine Division/Expeditionary Force on Monday.

"This felt a lot better," Schramm said.

Marine Corps Base, Hawaii's Gabriel Jaramillo, right, battles Jamie Diaz of 1st Marine Aircraft Wing for the ball.

Glenroy Gumbs converted to start the shootout for Wing, and Hugo Carillo answered for Hawaii before Wing’s Christian Villalobos’ attempt was stopped by Hawaii goalkeeper Kent Robbins.

But Schramm blocked Gabriel Jaramillo’s attempt, then Jose Pena converted in the third round to put Wing ahead to stay. After Schramm stopped Michael Moore’s try, both sides missed in the fourth round, then Contreras clinched it.

The shootout is primarily a guessing game for the goalkeeper, Schramm said.

"You try to read the player, look at the player a lot," Schramm said. "You can tell a lot by his stance. I know pretty much before they shoot which way they’re going to go.

"Sometimes you can’t get to the right side or the shot is out of reach. It happens. Today, it just fell my way."

The sides combined for three goals in a two-minute span during regulation play. Richard Glenn converted a cross from the right side from Pete Lee in the 18th minute to put Hawaii ahead 1-0.

Craig Johnson took a through pass from Pena to tie it for Wing less than a minute later. Glenn then drove the middle and scored in the 20th minute and Hawaii led 2-1 until Gumbs converted a rebound in the 55th minute to send it to a shootout.

3rd Force, Iwakuni on collision course

The two sides exchanged handshakes, a few hugs and one telling phrase: "See you in the finals."

Few can argue that defending champion 3rd Force Service Support Group of Okinawa seems to be on the fast track toward reaching its second straight title match. Third Force has outscored its three opponents 11-0.

But 3rd Force struggled to get past Japan’s Iwakuni Air Station, getting the only goal of the match in the 25th minute when Dawodu Ibidayo knocked Kenny Padilla-Paniagua’s feed past goalkeeper Glen Cross.

"I guess they’ve been training," 3rd Force coach Clinton Dyer said. "They have some size and speed, a fast attack, which kept us on our toes, kept us back defensively and we had to hold back on our attack."

Was this a preview of Friday’s championship match?

"We’ll see them in the finals," vowed Iwakuni’s Odin Pineda.

"Definitely," Dyer added. "I’ll put my money on it. If we make the finals, we’ll see them there."
