MONS, Belgium Police arrested an ethnic Albanian refugee early
Saturday morning on the grounds just outside the residence of U.S. Air Force Gen. Joseph
Ralston, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Belgian police said in a statement Sunday.
An Albanian refugee surrendered without incident to the Belgian
SHAPE Federal Police and U.S. military police on the grounds
said Francis
Schammo, deputy commander of the Belgian Federal Police at the Supreme Headquarters Allied
Powers Europe.
The man did not enter the SACEURs chateau in Mons, which the
Belgians have designated as the residence of NATOs top military commander, the
statement said. Belgian federal police, U.S. military police and special police have joint
responsibility for security of the SACEURs residence and the external grounds.
The statement did not indicate from what country the ethnic Albanian
man came. But he was taken into custody and transported to the Belgian SHAPE Federal
Police building for questioning, police said.
It was determined that his intent was to commit burglary, and
that he was an illegal resident of Belgium, the statement said. He returned to his
country on Sunday.
This is the second known burglary incident to happen recently to a
U.S. NATO official.
