WIESBADEN, Germany A 21-year-old U.S. Army soldier faces
murder charges relating to a car accident last month in Berlin that left one person dead
and two others injured, a 1st Armored Division spokesman said Friday.
Authorities suspect Spc. Deandre L. Walton was drunk when he collided
with another car on July 1, said Capt. Mike Wise, a division spokesman. Walton is assigned
to Headquarters, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment in Baumholder.
Army officials have scheduled an Article 32 hearing for Tuesday
morning in Baumholder.
The court proceeding is similar to a civilian pre-trial hearing, with
evidence presented and refuted, and, essentially, a decision to go to trial hanging in the
balance.
Walton was on leave at the time of the accident, Weis said. The
soldier was driving a rental car on a Berlin street when he allegedly struck a second
vehicle, killing the front-seat passenger and injuring two other occupants.
The most seriously injured occupant, a woman, recently awoke from a
coma, Weis said.
Weis said Walton faces several charges, including murder, resisting
arrest, assaulting police officers and driving while under the influence of alcohol.
The troop was arrested by German police in Berlin and later turned
over to the U.S. Army, which has exercised its jurisdiction in the matter.
