From left, Pfc. Christopher Swanson, Spc. Adam Bishop and Sgt. Wolfgang Gabse from 1st
Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, earned the right to wear mud from the soccer
field as warpaint by winning earlier in the day Sunday to take their team to the finals of
the Peacekeeper Games. |
CAMP
BONDSTEEL, Kosovo The competition was fierce but good-natured in the Peacekeeper
Games, which played out Saturday and Sunday on Camp Bondsteel.
"This
really boosted morale," said Pfc. Christopher Swanson, 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne
Infantry Regiment, on the sidelines of the soccer field Sunday. Swanson, who played
earlier in the day and helped take his team to the championship, had mud smeared on his
face like war paint.
Although
rain and cold weather forced Sundays basketball and volleyball championships inside,
the soccer championship was still played outdoors on a soupy field.
The 1st
Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment team took first place in the 5K run, and made
it to the championships in both soccer and volleyball.
The
Polish/Ukraine Battalion team, however, forced the 1st Battalion team to settle for second
place in both events.
The 4th
Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment team took first in the basketball tournament.
"It
was great to be able to play with international teams," said Sgt. Wolfgang Gabse,
also of the 1st Battalion. Gabse found the bright side to the days bad weather.
"Its a day off; I cant complain."
