Misawa thief took more than money from JROTC: Hard work went unrewarded

By Wayne Specht, Misawa bureau chief

MISAWA AIR BASE, Japan — Julie Frein has some words of advice for the person who stole $700 from a Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps classroom here: Take responsibility for your actions.

"This is totally unacceptable," Frein said. "These kids worked hard, and it is my understanding that the organization is not rolling in money."

Base officials confirmed they are investigating the theft.

"There is no indication of a break-in," Senior Airman Todd Lopez, a 35th Fighter Wing spokesman said. "The investigation is looking into how entry was gained and if the area was secured."

The JROTC office is located in the base’s Skills Development Annex.

Lt. Col. Jim Adams, commander of the 94-student JROTC unit, said there is evidence that the drawer of the filing cabinet in the office where the cash was stored was pried open.

"It looked like it was jimmied," he said.

Adams said the money was to be used for various JROTC functions and trips.

"Most of the kids felt really bad when they learned the money was taken," Adams added.

Frein’s son, Nathaniel, a 10th-grader, told his mother the theft happened sometime last week during the school’s spring break.

The unit raised the money at Japan Day on April 7.

Frein is asking parents to help the kids replace what was taken.

"As a show of support for the kids, I would hope we could rally people to participate. These kids worked hard, and I think it is right to let them know that we all care."
